Fireworks at home: the law
North Carolina allows only a narrow set of consumer fireworks: sparklers and hand-held or ground-based sparkling devices that do not explode, spin or leave the ground, under the state’s pyrotechnics law. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and other aerial fireworks need a permit. The N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal urges people to leave fireworks to the professionals, sparklers included. Over the 2026 holiday the office counted 27 fireworks-related incidents statewide, three deaths and more than $4.3 million in damage, according to its July 13 report.
To report illegal fireworks, call the Winston-Salem Police Department’s non-emergency line, 336-773-7700, according to the city’s Telcom page. For a fire or injury, call 911.
